HIST300A: Post-Romanticism Lecture Thoughts

Hey guys, I have three links below to other artwork that you might find interesting. These links were all provided by your fellow classmates.

Per Brian, the series of Cole paintings he was referring to in class.

Per Leah, a really vivid example of the sublime.

Per Jenna, a more contemporary attempt to achieve the sublime, but through very different approaches.

  1. I appreciate Brian, Leah, and Jenna for sharing their findings. I looked at all three of these sights and even though each painting is unique, they all reflect upon aspects of Thursday's lecture. For example, when I looked at Brian's sight and viewed each stage of the voyager’s life, I realized that in Thomas Cole's paintings the voyager does not attain his youthful daydream. These paintings made me think about the benefits and disadvantages that are brought about as mankind seeks after their visions for progress.

  2. I thought the painting that Leah posted was really unique. The light emanating from the center of the painting almost looks like it was made using modern CGI technology.

The series of paintings which I posted are located in the National Gallery in D.C. If you are ever up there, they are well worth seeing. I have seen them several times, and the room in which they are housed is a good place to contemplate things.

  3. the contemporary paintings are great. I love how they still represent the human world and the natural worlds overlapping. They are less "majestic" than the Cole paintings in that they don't show as much Natural and virgin land as Cole. However, they do still get the point across that our worlds collide.
